One of the best terms I've come across recently is Reality Distortion Field from the book Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson. This term was coined to describe Steve's ability to see beyond what exists right now and his belief in others that they themselves could create something that in “reality” was not possible.
Without knowing the term previously, I've certainly distorted reality in my own life in such a short period of time and continually am today. I've created so many things in my life, and the lives of people around me that if you told me 5 years ago where I'd be today, I would have said you're crazy.
So how do you engaged your own Reality Distortion Field? Easy. Get extremely clear about what you want to create in your life. Obsess about it. Work your freaking ass off to make it happen. Be passionate about it – be so passionate that the people around you will want to come along for the ride and help you distort reality. If anyone tells you it's not possible, hit the delete button on them – or just pretend they don't exist. Make your vision of your product, business, career or life more real than the reality you're currently living in.
Just as important, don't chase money. Be passionate about creation, be passionate about change, be passionate about making people's lives better, be passionate about setting an example for others. If you make your higher purpose your number one priority; in combination with adding massive value to the masses and doing it in a way like no one's ever done it before, the money will come.
Lastly, give yourself a K.I.S.S. – Keep It Simple Stupid. Don't overcomplicate your life. Have huge goals and dreams and go after them. But keep lazer-focused on your vision and don't get distracted with things that don't serve that vision. Say ‘No' to more things than you say ‘Yes'.
“We’re here to put a dent in the universe. Otherwise why else even be here?” – Steve Jobs

This is my favorite read in a long time. I’m definitely sharing this.
As a writer, I’ve had people tell me “Go ahead and write your book, but it will never sell.” “That article will never sell.” “You can’t make money as a writer.” “That’s not worth your time.” “Nobody will ever read that.” “You don’t know how to speak to the masses.” “You can’t really write.” I mentally hit the delete button on them over and over and over, but you know what—their voices come back. Aaaaand I hit delete again! (Although if they have a legitimate point, I listen to improve.)
One reason I can hit the delete button on them is because I don’t necessarily write for money—I write for the love of writing and to share. Still, I do have eight kids to feed…
Great post, Alex. Thank you!
Glad you loved the post Christy!
That’s amazing that you’re doing what you love! People have no idea what it feels like and their negative feedback is only because they haven’t allowed themselves to do what they love, therefore they can’t stand seeing other people doing what they love. It’s insane!
But keep powering on! Life is fulfilling when you do what you love 🙂
Believing something so hard you can make it true. A great way to look at motivation. So many things never happen in business, or in life in general just because we are unsure. We never believe enough to risk everything, to fulfill a dream.
So far I am half way on this. I am very good at believing something can happen despite evidence to the contrary. (I am a Detroit Lions fan after all). Now if I can just believe hard enough for them to win a playoff game.
Absolutely Brian! The power to create lies within our belief. If a person doesn’t believe they can achieve something, they won’t even try; and therefore they’ll get unsatisfactory results. Then they’ll justify to themselves saying: “I knew I couldn’t achieve that!” In ends up being a self-fulfilling prophesy.
On the other hand, if the person has absolutely certainty that they CAN achieve it, they’ll do everything they can with all their heart and soul to create that. The results they get from this will be amazing and they’ll justify to themselves saying: “See! I know I could achieve that!”
Great share Bryan! And thanks for stopping by 🙂
Nice article, I love to read your articles. I just bookmarked your blog! He was a true believer and genius. He dreamed about innovative things and made them reality.
Thank you Harry. He sure did! And just like Steve, we can be innovative in our own lives and create something greater than what exists right now 🙂
Great post Alex!
I love your consistent message of focusing on helping others. It is such a happier way to be, no?
Thank you for the motivation.
