Yesterday I was at home and my wife, Dacia, came up to me because she wanted to go to the park as a family. We ended up going and had so much fun! It was quite refreshing too as I had been working all day.
Going to the park got me thinking about how important it is to have fun during work and out of work. Believe it or not, having fun actually allows you to be more productive. And because of this I want to share 4 tips that will help you get more done in less time.
Tip 1 – Have a morning routine
Most people, when they get out of bed they’re not going to feel too good. They’re might feel sluggish and they won’t want to get out of bed. If you start your morning with this mindset, the rest of your day will just get worse as it progresses. At the end of the day, you might be frustrated and stressed because you had a lot of challenges thrown your way and you might not have recovered from them. However, having a morning routine can make all the difference to your day!
What can you do for a morning routine?
Well, you’ll have to figure out your own routine. But I’ll let you know what I do.
1. I’ll have a green drink that cleanses my system and gives me more energy.
2. I’ll go for a run which gets my body into a peak state. Running also makes me feel like I’ve done something challenging and conquered it, therefore making any other challenges not seem as hard to overcome.
3. I’ll do some Personal Development. This could be reading a book or listening to an audio that fills my mind with positivity. Like I mentioned before, if you wake up and your day instantly feels like a drag, then your whole day will turn out that way. However, if you read a positive book, you’re going to feel great, excited and ready to take on the world.
A book I read recently is the Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson. It was amazing understanding how Steve Jobs created his success and being able to apply his principles into my life. Reading this book fired me up and all I wanted to do after reading it was to accomplish more!
Tip 2 – Have fun while you’re working
So many people have been taught that work must be hard and that you have to work long hours to be successful. This is far from the truth! If you want to be happy and successful in life, you must have fun while you work! If you want to accomplish more, mix things up a little by putting some music you enjoy in the background.
Have you ever had an experience where time just seemed to fly by? Where one hour felt like 5 minutes? And you were left wondering where all that time went? A while ago, I learned from Tony Robbins that time = emotion. For example, if you’re having a bad day, it’s going to feel like it drags on forever. But if you’re having a fun day, your day is going to fly by. So make sure to have fun while you work!
Tip 3 – Have regular breaks
Sometime you can get so caught up with “working hard” but by having a break you refresh your mind.
A few years ago, I used to write music and when I’d spend 2 or 3 hours writing something, I couldn’t keep going. And even if I kept trying to push through it, whatever I wrote came out horrible. However, when I did take a relaxing break and then came back to my piece of music, I’d see what I wrote and instantly I’d see how I could finish it and make it better – all thanks to seeing it from a fresh perspective!
So remember, if you take regular breaks, you’ll get more done. If you feel like you have to continue dragging it out and working harder, your work is just going to turn into crap and by the end of the day you won’t have accomplish anything. So make sure to take those break. And drink plenty of water too!
Tip 4 – Get out and have fun!
Earlier today, my wife suggested that we go to the beach and have some fun, even though I was working. So we just went out and it’s made such a huge difference! After the beach, I’m going to go home and get back into work, but feeling refreshed. This is what you should do with yourself often.
A lot of people are working toward big financial goals but they tell themselves that they’re not going to take a break or enjoy life until they make a million dollars. And guess what happens? They don’t get there because they’re always so tired and worn out. And some of those that do make the million dollars, then they still don’t take a break, go on holiday, or go to the beach, because their new goal is now to make 5 million dollars.
There’s a term called Delayed Gratification, which means telling yourself that you’ll start enjoying life once you achieve a certain goal. This isn’t a very fulfilling way to do life. A secret to success is to start enjoying life NOW. If you have a family and a business, maybe you can go to the beach or a park in the morning and work in the afternoon or at night.
So remember, time = emotion. If you want to be more productive in your life, start enjoying life now and have fun while you work.

All your Tips on “Productivity” aka get more done in less time are great. IN fact I particularly love that you didn’t focus on all the techie stuff, rather on what really comes from i side and creates the outside!
Superb!
Thanks Julie! Too right.. if we can’t get the inside working, we’ll never get the outside working.
Thanks for your comment 🙂
Love these tips Alex. Having our own business ought not be a grind. We got into it because we were looking for time freedom. It’s really important to mix pleasure in with the work — and then the work becomes more pleasurable. (Glad to hear that your wife pulled you away from your office for a while).
Starting the morning off with some mental clearing and physical exercise is a great way to get going. Appreciate these tips. Thanks.
Absolutely right Carol! When life is fun, everything else is fun 🙂
Thanks for your comment.
Totally agree Alex! It is essential for us to take the time to smell the roses as the saying goes. We can’t always bury ourselves in work and not give ourselves a break. That’s how stress develops.
I’ve always devoted time with my family. What’s important is to be present. if you are at work, work. If you are at home, spend time with the family and take your mind off work.
Spot on Noel! And when we’re enjoying life, work and everything else we do becomes a breeze 🙂
Thanks for commenting.
love it, its all about working smart instead of working hard
It sure is 🙂 You can get more done by working smarter than working harder.
Love the blog, I am going to Sydney during Dec, and that is precisely what I am going to do, mix pleasure and work! This is a healthy lifestyle!
That’s awesome Annalize! That’s the beauty of having a lifestyle business 🙂
Excellent article, Alex. Working without breaks is certainly not the best way to improve productivity. Having regular breaks will help you refresh and unwind, which makes it easier to stay on-task, be attentive and solve problems. Thanks, Niraj
Spot on Niraj… you got it! Thanks for your comment 🙂
